July 3, 2019

Issued by Strategic Communications and Marketing VP Nancy Paton:

The University of Florida is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Huixiang Chen, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Huixiang died June 13 of an apparent suicide and left behind a note suggesting possible research misconduct by his faculty adviser. The university is thoroughly investigating these issues appropriately through the Office of Research. In addition to the UF Police Department’s investigation, the university also is examining the circumstances surrounding Huixiang’s death, including securing the services of an independent investigator with acknowledged expertise in higher education. We hold our faculty members to the very highest standards of integrity, honesty, ethics and proper conduct toward and treatment of students.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Huixiang and extend our thoughts and condolences to his family and friends. A memorial service for Huixiang is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at the Baughman Center.
